Outer Banks Season 1 Episodes Ranked According To IMDb
Outer Banks recently premiered its second season on Netflix. Like the first season, it was well-received. Let’s take a look back at audience ratings for the episodes of season 1.
Netflix’s Outer Banks recently premiered its second season to great success. The first season, comprising ten episodes, premiered in April 2020 to instant popularity. The series is a beach-set teen drama — with an excellent soundtrack to match — and mystery in which John B searches for lost treasure with his friends.
The Pogues are the lower-class inhabitants of the Outer Banks, constantly facing the disparagement of the Kooks, who essentially run the island. John B is an orphan, though he doesn’t know it at the beginning of the series, and soon enough he’s on the run from the authorities with the Kook princess herself, Sarah Cameron.
10. Pilot (7.4)
The first episode of the series is also the lowest-rated on IMDb, though 7.4/10 suggests that viewers enjoyed it. In this episode, the audience is introduced to the characters and the setting in which they live.
The primary focus is establishing who the characters are, what they want, and why they want it; namely, why John B is so intent on finding this lost treasure. Viewers learn that his father has been missing for some time after embarking on a quest to find said treasure — apparently to no avail.
9. The Lucky Compass (7.6)
This is the second episode of the season, in which John B finally decides to follow JJ’s advice and kiss Kiara. Unfortunately, she doesn’t exactly invite the kiss and insists that Pogues should remain friends as per their rules.
The Pogues are also continuing their search for the treasure after finding Big John’s compass, which has been passed down through generations of men who died while having it in their possession. Not-so-lucky, perhaps? Meanwhile, two mysterious men are pursuing the Pogues, armed with guns and a lot of anger.
8. The Forbidden Zone (7.6)
In the third episode, the Pogues think they finally know where the Royal Merchant is, but they need some equipment to make sure. After stealing Ward Cameron’s scuba gear, John B loses his job and he thinks it’s Sarah’s fault.
Plan B is to steal gear from the local scrapyard, which goes as well as it can — by Pogue standards. They take the gear out to sea where, naturally, a storm is approaching, but the Pogues manage to find the wreck anyway.
7. Spy Games (8.1)
The next episode takes John B away from home as he needs an escape from everyone who’s looking for him. He also needs to find out what and where Parcel 9 is.
Sarah Cameron happens to run into him when he needs assistance, and the two take a boat over to Chapel Hill, where they get the information they need and seal the deal with a kiss at the end of the episode. Meanwhile, the other three Pogues go to a movie where tensions rise with the Kooks, and the screen ends up in flames.
6. Midsummers (8.1)
The fifth episode sees an unlikely turn of events when the Pogues and Kooks unite at a poorly timed party. Pope and JJ are there working, while Kiara must attend with her Kook family. John B is there to let Sarah know he found the treasure.
Topper becomes jealous of John B and follows him after the party when he meets up with Sarah at the top of a tower. Topper pushes John B over, and he ends up injured but alive. Ward Cameron offers to be John B’s legal guardian.
5. The Bell Tower (8.1)
The second-to-last episode of the season sees the Pogues on the run, naturally. Pope has just fled his college interview to help his friends, which earns him Kiara’s respect.
This episode also sees an unlikely twist in Topper’s character arc. Still jealous, he pursues John B all over town, wanting to find him for himself. However, he also refuses to turn him in to the cops after he escapes from Kelce’s house. When he finds him with Sarah in the bell tower, he helps them and lets them escape.
4. Dead Calm (8.2)
In the seventh episode of the season, John B feels that he owes Ward his thanks, so he agrees to go on a fishing trip with him. This doesn’t go too well; Ward ends up trying to kill John B with a spear.
Other points of interest in this episode include a frantic chase from Rafe’s drug dealer, Barry, who wants to steal the Pogues’ lump of gold. In the end, John B is the hero and they manage to escape once again.
3. Parcel 9 (8.3)
In the sixth episode, the Pogues finally access Parcel 9, which happens to be underneath the house of a serial killer. But before this can happen, the boys must get Sarah and Kiara to set aside their differences.
They leave the two girls stranded on a boat for a night, during which time they make up and become friends again. Afterward, the Pogues go to Parcel 9, where John B finds the gold and takes a sample.
2. The Phantom (8.3)
The finale sees the epic chase continue, with John B making his getaway with Sarah. The Pogues part with teary goodbyes, but on the bright side, Kiara and Pope come to a resolution and Kiara agrees to begin a romantic relationship.
John B and Sarah encounter a few obstacles, including special forces, who chase them all the way out into a stormy sea. Ward tries to talk some sense into them over the radio, but John B exposes him, leaving him to be questioned by the police.
1. The Runway (8.5)
The highest-rated episode of Outer Banks so far is “The Runway.” This is the eighth episode of the first season, in which Ward plans to escape to the Bahamas with Sarah and the gold.
John B decides to rescue her by driving his van through a fence and straight into the line of the approaching plane. (What could possibly go wrong?) His plan somehow works, but before he and Sarah can get out of there, the Sheriff shows up and arrests Ward. At this moment, Rafe arrives and shoots the Sheriff.
