Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Of all of William Shakespeare’s plays, Romeo and Juliet is one of the most revisited and recreated. His other well-known works, like Hamlet or Macbeth, don’t appeal to an audience quite as broad. The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet has withstood the test of time and proven to be an almost universal tale that can transcend time and place, as proven by Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film adaptation.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes star as the titular lovers, only in this universe, they live in a gang-riddled city. Their families are constantly at war, which leaves the respective offspring stuck in the same conundrum as in Shakespeare’s original play.

When they meet at a party, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other, but it’s not long before they learn whose children they are. Still, they pursue their romance and plan to marry. In their haste to seal their love within the pages of eternity, they end up betraying their parents and making a few grave mistakes.

The film is known for its vibrant cinematography, gritty storytelling, and sharp soundtrack. Here are fourteen beautiful stills from Romeo + Juliet.
